There have never been more brands, features and configurations to consider, and given that we're still dealing with inflation, you may also be concerned about rising prices. The good news is, companies are still making a ton of new laptops, and there are plenty of models for you to choose from the budget HP Pavilion Aero 13 to the convertible Microsoft Surface Pro 9 to our best overall pick of the Apple MacBook Air M2. We've made it less complicated for you to pick out the best laptop for your needs.

You probably have an idea of your budget, but just so you know, most modern laptops with top-of-the-line specs can cost you around $1,800 to $2,000 these days. That doesn’t mean you won’t find a good system for under $1,000 — a grand is the base price for a lot of premium ultraportables in the 13-inch category, with chips like Intel’s Core i3 or i5 series. And if that’s too expensive, you’ll still have respectable options in the $600 to $800 range, but they might come with older, slower processors and dimmer screens. I’ve included our favourite budget-friendly model in this best laptop roundup but we have a list of more-affordable laptops that you can check out as well.

After working out how much money you want to spend, the laptop’s operating system is usually the first thing you have to narrow down. As always, the decision is slightly easier for people who prefer MacBooks. Now that Apple has brought its M-series chips to its whole lineup — your only real considerations are budget, screen size and how much power you need.

Over on Team Windows, however, the shift to ARM-based chips hasn’t been as smooth. Though Apple has been able to bring huge increases in battery life while maintaining (and in some cases improving) performance with its own silicon, PC makers have been limited by Windows’ shortcomings. Microsoft released Windows 11 last year, and it’s supposed to run better on ARM-powered machines. Since the first of these laptops, like Lenovo’s ThinkPad X13s or 10w tablet, haven’t been available for review yet, we can’t tell how well the system runs. Of course, you can upgrade to Windows 11 on existing ARM-based PCs, but for now, it’s still safer to stick with an Intel or AMD processor.

Let’s not forget there’s a third and fairly popular laptop operating system: Chrome. If you do most of your work in a browser (lots of online research, emails and Google Drive), then a Chromebook might be a suitable, and often more affordable option.

As for other things to look out for, it’s worth pointing out that a couple of laptops coming out this year are doing away with headphone jacks. Though this doesn’t seem to be a prevalent trend yet, it’s a good reminder to check that a machine has all the connectors you need. Most laptops in 2022 offer WiFi 6 or 6E and Bluetooth 5.0 or later, which should mean faster and more stable connections if you have compatible routers and devices. While 5G coverage is more widespread this year, whether you need support for that depends on how much you travel.

Where you plan on taking your laptop also helps in deciding what size to get. Many companies launched new 14-inch machines in the last year, straddling the line between ultraportable and bulkier 15-inch offerings. For most people, a 14-inch screen is a great middle ground. But if you’re worried about weight, a 12- or 13-inch model will be better. Those that want more powerful processors and larger displays will prefer 15- or 16-inch versions.

Best overall: MacBook Air M2

As a Windows user, I find myself reluctant to name an Apple MacBook the best overall laptop. But I can’t deny that Apple’s transition to its own Silicon has made its machines better. The latest MacBook Air M2 is a worthy sequel to the M1 that came out in 2020, bringing a fresh design and a performance boost that all users will appreciate.

That's not to say the M1 was a sluggish machine — quite the contrary. We found it to be impressively fast, and the M2 only builds on top of that stellar performance. It's probably overkill for a MacBook Air, but that means it will serve most people well for both work and play. Plus, its impressive 16.5-hour battery life should be enough for anyone to get a day's worth of work and then some.

Related: How to Make Your Laptop Work Faster

As for its design, we like that Apple took a more uniformly thin approach here and retired the wedge shape of the previous model. The M2 Air also has a lovely 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display, interrupted only by the top notch which holds its 1080p webcam. Its quad-speaker setup is an improvement as well, and all of these small hardware changes add up to a machine that looks and feels more different than you may expect from its predecessor. However, both the Apple M1 and M2 MacBook Air laptops remain solid machines. Considering the M2 starts at $1,199, those with tight budgets may be willing to forgo the new design improvements in order to save some cash and get a still-speedy laptop.

Best Windows: Dell XPS 13 Plus

The best PC has long been Dell’s well-rounded XPS 13 series and I still recommend it to anyone that doesn’t want a Mac. Yes, the new XPS 13 Plus lacks a headphone jack, and we haven’t got one in to test yet. But the XPS 13 is a well-rounded Windows laptop and still one of the best-looking PCs out there.

Like its predecessors, the Dell XPS 13 Plus offers a lovely OLED screen with impressively thin bezels and packs a roomy, comfortable keyboard. It also features a new minimalist design that looks more modern. I’m not sure about the row of capacitive keys at the top in lieu of traditional function keys, but I’m confident that the laptop’s 12th-gen Intel Core processors will provide a healthy performance boost from the last model.

If you’re not sure about the changes Dell has made to the XPS 13, or if you definitely need a headphone jack, the older generations are still solid options. There’s also the Samsung Galaxy Book 2 Pro series, which feature beautiful OLED screens and sharper webcams in thin and light frames. I also like Microsoft’s Surface Laptops, and the most recent edition offers great performance and battery life, albeit in an outdated design.

Best for gaming: Razer Blade 15 Advanced

Gamers should look for machines with responsive screens and ample ports for their favourite accessories that can best help them defeat their virtual enemies. Our pick for the best gaming laptop is the Razer Blade 15 Advanced, which has an Intel Core i7 processor, and an NVIDIA RTX 3070 graphics for $2,500.

It’s the most expensive item on this list, but you also get a 15-inch quad HD screen that refreshes at 240Hz. Different configurations are available, depending on your preference, including a Full HD 360Hz and a 4K 144Hz version. The Blade series is also one of the most polished gaming laptops around.

Those looking for a budget gaming laptop should consider the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14, which was our favourite model last year. The main reason it got bumped down a notch is that the 2022 refresh is almost $600 more expensive. It’s still a solid gaming laptop though, with an excellent display, roomy trackpad and plenty of ports in spite of its thin profile.

Best Chromebook: Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5i Chromebook

Our favourite Chromebook is Lenovo’s Flex 5 Chromebook. This laptop nails the basics, with a 13-inch Full HD touchscreen, a fantastic keyboard and a 10th-generation Intel Core i3 processor. The 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage may sound meager, but in our testing the Flex 5 held up in spite of this constraint. It’s also nice to see one USB-A and two USB-C ports, eight hours of battery life and a 360-degree hinge that makes it easy to use the Flex 5 as a tablet. That’s a bonus, especially now that Chrome OS supports Android apps.

Though the Flex 5 is almost two years old by now, it’s a solid deal at around $400. In fact, you can sometimes find it on sale for as little as $300, making it a great option for someone looking for a basic browser-based machine on a tight budget.

Best budget: HP Pavilion Aero 13

If you’re looking for a cheap laptop priced around $800, your best bet is the HP Pavilion Aero 13. For around $799 (or often less when on sale), you’ll get a Full HD screen with a 16:10 aspect ratio and surprisingly thin bezels, as well as a comfortable keyboard and spacious trackpad. Importantly, the Aero 13 provides relatively powerful components compared to others in this price range, with an AMD Ryzen 5000 series processor and Radeon graphics. Plus, it has a generous array of ports and enough battery life to last you the entire work day and then some.

Best convertible: Microsoft Surface Pro 9

For those who need their laptops to occasionally double as tablets, the Surface Pro series is a good option. Compared to notebooks with rotating hinges, tablets with kickstands are often much slimmer and lighter. The Surface Pro 9 is Microsoft's latest 2-in-1 laptop model and if you've had your eye on a Surface for a while, just know to get the Intel version of this machine rather than the ARM model. In our testing, we found that the 5G ARM version of the Pro 9 was much slower than a flagship convertible should be and that's mostly due to the fact that lots of the Windows apps readily available on Intel's x86 hardware have to be emulated to work on Microsoft's custom ARM SoC. Considering you'll pay at least $1,000 for any Surface Pro 9 model, you might as well get a configuration that has as few limitations as possible.

While we have our gripes about the Pro 9's overall ergonomics, it's undoubtedly one of the thinnest and lightest laptop alternatives you can get. It's attractive and has a gorgeous 13-inch display, and we still consider Microsoft's Type Cover to be one of the best you can get, period. They will cost you extra, though, so be prepared to shell out another $100 to $180 for one. Microsoft's Slim Pen 2 is another highlight, and it will be a must-buy accessory for anyone that loves to draw or prefers to take handwritten notes. Overall, if you want a machine that can switch seamlessly from being a laptop to being a tablet, the Intel Surface Pro 9 is one of your best bets. Of course, if you're married to the Apple ecosystem, you should consider an iPad Pro.

The claimed images depict the new flagships' camera placement, color scheme, and design, which Samsung is expected to reveal next month.

A metal frame and glass cover appear to be shared by the S23 Ultra and Plus. Phantom Black, Cotton Flower (cream), Botanic Green, and Misty Lilac are the four colors that both models are available in (pink or lavender). All S23 series models should offer the same color selections if those match the colors revealed this week by WinFuture. The back of the Ultra contains five camera sensors and is generally flatter than the back of its predecessor. The primary, ultra-wide, and 10x telephoto lenses of the S23 Ultra are presumably the three lenses that are larger than the other two. The side buttons on the Ultra are also a little bit lower than those on their predecessor.

A 200-megapixel main camera on the Ultra is rumored to be a first for the Galaxy range. (Models in the Standard and Plus range should have 50 megapixels). Additionally, it is said that the Ultra will feature improved focusing and stability over its predecessor. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipsets are anticipated to power both phones globally, departing from Samsung's customary use of Snapdragon processors in the US and Exynos chips in Asia and Europe.

On February 1st, Samsung will make all the specifics public during its Galaxy Unpacked event. However, the business has already made bookings available to Americans.

In recent years, the smartphone market has seen a shift away from budget-friendly options and towards flagship devices. While these high-end phones come with a premium price tag, they also offer a host of advanced features and capabilities that budget options cannot match. However, one area where budget phones have traditionally had an advantage over flagships is in software support. As newer versions of the operating system are released, budget phones are often left behind, with no updates available for them. This can be frustrating for users who want to keep their devices up-to-date and secure.

But now, a new trend is emerging in the smartphone market: flagships are beginning to receive longer software support than ever before. This means that instead of being abandoned after a few years, flagship devices are being updated and maintained for longer periods of time, providing users with a better overall experience.

This trend is being driven by several factors. First, the competitive nature of the smartphone market has led manufacturers to focus on differentiating themselves from their rivals. By offering longer software support for flagships, manufacturers can provide a better overall experience for users, making their devices more appealing than competitors. Additionally, the increasing complexity of smartphones and the growing importance of software updates for security and performance have led manufacturers to recognize the need for longer software support.

Another reason for this trend is the increasing cost of flagships. As the prices of these devices continue to rise, manufacturers are under more pressure to justify the cost by providing longer software support. By keeping devices up to date for longer periods of time, manufacturers can make the case that their flagships are a better value than budget options over the long term.

The benefits of longer software support for flagships are clear. For users, it means that their devices will stay up-to-date and secure for longer periods of time. This can be especially important for business users or anyone who relies on their smartphone for work or personal use. Additionally, longer software support can also lead to better performance and new features for users, providing a better overall experience.

Despite these benefits, it's worth noting that not all manufacturers are offering the same level of software support. While some companies like Samsung, Google, OnePlus and Apple are providing 3-4 years of software support, others are still lagging behind. It's important for consumers to research the software support policies of different manufacturers before making a purchase.

In conclusion, the trend towards longer software support for flagships is a positive development for users, providing them with a better overall experience. As the smartphone market continues to evolve, it's likely that this trend will continue, and more manufacturers will begin to offer longer software support for their flagship devices. As a consumer, it is important to consider the software support when purchasing a flagship device, as it can be a major factor in the overall value of the device over time.

Nobody is denying that, and everyone would gladly take that. But since that’s not an option, and as we saw with Netflix’s Q1 2022 numbers, people are shedding the service now more than ever. That’s what a rate hike will do to you. And they are even going to crack down on people who are sharing passwords, which is only going to lose them more subscribers. Plus, ads are coming quicker than we realized.

But there are ways out of this. We can give you a great overview of the best apps to stream free movies and shows. While you may want to keep an eye on what is coming out each month on the streaming service, we’re saying join those hundreds of thousands of others who dropped the service.

You probably think that you have too many subscription services as it is. You don’t need to be paying for live TV. That’s the first part. For those looking to save money and enjoy free entertainment, you’ve come to the right place. On top of getting rid of cable, you should cancel Netflix and any other video services you currently subscribe to.

That might seem like a crazy idea to some people, but desperate times call for desperate measures. Especially as the price of everything around us is rising, including gas, you want to find ways to cut the cost. Inflation is at its highest rate in decades, so you have to find ways to save.

Emoticons have fundamentally altered the way we communicate digitally. Emojis are a popular way for people to express or convey their emotions and sentiments in text. Our ability to communicate has been greatly improved by emojis, to the point that many smartphone keyboards now suggest appropriate ones as we type. On July 17, people all across the world celebrate World Emoji Day. This commemorative occasion was first publicly proposed in 2013 by Jeremy Burge, founder of Emojipedia. Interestingly, the date July 17 was chosen since this is the date shown on the emoji for "calendar". Over 3,500 emojis are currently available as part of commonly used hardware, software, and online services.

Lets's dive into the list of the most commonly used emojis in today's world:

Red Heart emoticon: This is amongst the most often used emoticons. It can be used to convey affection and passion. A standard red heart, multiple hearts, and various other colours and depictions of people together with hearts are available on most platforms.

Loudly crying face emoticon: A yellow face with an open mouth sobbing and streams of heavy tears might confuse an unprepared user, but fear not. While this emoji might be used to represent sadness, it is also sometimes used to express happiness or relief.

Face with tears of joy emoticon: The "Face with tears of joy" emoticon depicts someone who is so delighted that tears stream down their cheeks. When someone says or does something hilarious or embarrassing, it can be used as an emotional tone marker to indicate delight or merriment.

Pleading face emoticon: There are several uses for the "large puppy-dog eyes" emoji. People sometimes use it to demonstrate their unhappiness, while others use it to demonstrate concern. If you want to express pity, affection, or adoration for someone on social media, the pleading face emoji is an option.

Rolling on floor laughing emoticon: The yellow face that appears to be rolling around in laughter tipped on its side will be familiar to many. This emoji typically depicts fits of uncontrollable laughter, in contrast to Face with Tears of Joy. It is also frequently used as a retort when somebody says something you might find ridiculous.

Various forms of self-driving cars are being tested in different parts of the world, but now local authorities in Beijing are so confident in the technology that they are allowing the cars to drive through the streets without a human at the wheel. They do, however, require that a safety officer is onboard the vehicle to keep a constant eye on it.

Their current sensor installation solution can cover 360 degrees and has a detection range of 200 meters. When installing the different sensors and from different perspectives, 3 lidars are used, on top and on the sides. The lidar has a detection range of 100 meters. At the same time, the 360-degree field of view of the camera is covered by 4 wide-angle cameras. The wide-angle field of view extends the perception distance to a range of 200 meters by using a front-facing millimetre-wave radar and a telephoto camera. These sensor configurations can ensure that autonomous vehicles can drive autonomously in scenarios such as residential areas, commercial areas, and industrial zones.

Baidu and Pony.ai’s cars are also limited to certain parts of Beijing – not the entire city. They can only move around the Yizhuang area, which is said to be about 60 square kilometres and home to 300,000 residents.

Baidu has received approval for 10 self-driving cars in the area, while Pony.ai is allowed four. However, Baidu says it plans to expand operations to at least 30 cars.

Just last November, the two companies received permission from authorities to operate taxi services in the city. At the time, they were required to have a “driver” behind the wheel, although the driver should not be driving the car but should be ready to take control in case something unexpected happens.

The taxis are only available during the day – 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for Baidu and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for Pony.ai – and both are summoned through the company’s own apps.

But there’s good news for anyone who’s been missing the company’s Galaxy Note: Samsung just teased its return, though it will be a different device than what you might expect.

“At Unpacked in February 2022, we’ll introduce you to the most noteworthy S series device we’ve ever created,” Samsung President Dr. TM Roh, head of the company’s MX Business, wrote. “The next generation of Galaxy S is here, bringing together the greatest experiences of our Samsung Galaxy into one ultimate device.”

Samsung launched the Galaxy Note in 2011 to great fanfare. The 5.3-inch display was one of the biggest screens you could get at the time. And even as flagship phones grew in screen size, the Note morphed into the most premium device of Samsung’s smartphone lineup, with the company reserving its most premium specs and features for the Note. (Let us not forget the exploding batteries, too.)

Now, Samsung is passing the baton to the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, which Roh mentioned at the end of his Unpacked teaser: “Get ready for the ultimate Ultra experience.”

It’s been rumoured that Samsung would replace the Ultra version of its Galaxy S lineup with a Note-like device—complete with a slot for the S Pen. You can buy the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra now and get that kind of S Pen functionality, but there’s no docking spot for the stylus without investing in a clunky case.

But the S Pen isn’t the only part of the Note that people liked. It often had the best cameras of any Samsung phone, plus a beefy processor and plenty of space for documents and photos. The Note was positioned as a phone for power users. It makes sense that the Galaxy S22 Ultra (which is what we expect it to be called) would take its place, where Samsung can consolidate its supply chain while also enticing you to pay a little bit extra for better hardware.

Samsung offered a few hints at some of the features to expect from the Ultra. There’s a mention of owning “the night” to take “the best and brightest photos,” which seems to suggest a larger image sensor for capturing light. There’s a promise you’ll “dominate the day with power,” which sounds like there’s a big battery stuffed inside. This will also be the “smartest” Galaxy experience, which makes me believe it has something to do with Matter—maybe something akin to Samsung’s recently announced Home Hub.

All of this syncs up with what’s leaked about the Galaxy S22 Ultra. Leaks indicate that the Ultra will sport an interesting camera array consisting of a 108MP wide-angle primary camera, a 12MP ultra-wide lens, a 10MP telephoto lens with 10x zoom, and a second 10MP telephoto lens with 3X zoom. Other unconfirmed specs include a 6.8-inch AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, up to 16GB of RAM, and at least 512GB of storage. And it’s likely to be powered by the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip.

Samsung is opening reservations on Jan. 21 for whatever the new Note-like Ultra will be before announcing any additional details. If you’re feeling brave, you can also reserve Samsung’s next tablet. Both are available to reserve on Samsung’s website.

Due to a continuing chip scarcity, products announced this year have been delayed, shipping weeks or even months late. Some products that were supposed to be released in 2021 have been pushed to 2022.

Despite the upheaval, there were dozens of new fantastic technologies announced this year. These are the ones we tested and liked, the ones that helped us get through the year and will help us get through a rocky start to 2022.

Apple’s MacBook Pro With M1 Max

The M1 chip in the MacBook Air and Pro impressed us to the point that we wondered how Apple could raise the performance ceiling any higher. Then, this year, Apple released the improved M1 Pro and M1 Max Chipsets in the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros. It would be an understatement to say that the new Pros are impressive. However, that isn't the whole story. Sure, the MacBook Pro is more powerful than almost any laptop on the market today, but it's also a lot more. The 14-inch model is a huge upgrade over its 13-inch predecessor, even if you (somehow) neglect the new Chipsets.

Google has been creating phones for a long time, but it didn't feel like the Pixel lineup arrived until 2021. The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro feel like a fresh start after some dubious releases (squints at Pixel 5) from a company that once seemed poised to challenge Apple. Google has made it tough for Android customers to justify buying anything else by updating the cameras, employing premium components, and keeping the pricing lower than anyone expected ($599 for the Pixel 6!).

The Analogue Pocket was first revealed in October of 2019, but owing to the ongoing pandemic, it took another year (and then some) before it began shipping to those who preordered the console in August of 2020. However, the wait was well worth it.

China continues to export a continuous stream of handheld consoles. While these devices can play games from a variety of retro systems, such as the NES, Genesis, and SNES, they rely on software emulation, which is prone to performance issues and errors, resulting in less-than-ideal gameplay. With a proprietary Field-Programmable Gate Array chip engineered to perform exactly like the Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Sega Game Gear, and several other classic handhelds, the Analogue Pocket takes a whole different approach.

As a result, the handheld analogue pocket can play games from any of those systems without skipping frames, graphical flaws, or audio sync problems. The FPGA in the Analogue Pocket is combined with a stunning 3.5-inch LCD display that has more pixels per inch than the iPhone 13 Pro. The screen can not only make classic handheld games seem fantastic, but it can also exactly recreate how these games appeared on their original devices within the constraints of display technology in the 1980s and 1990s. It's the ideal Game Boy, but getting your hands on one will be difficult.

Beats, which is owned by Apple, has long developed excellent headphones and earbuds that work well with a number of gadgets, but with the $200 Beats Fit Pro this year, the company has really cracked it.

Previous Beats headphones had a number of flaws, and in recent years, this has been due to Apple saving its greatest technology (such as the H1 chip, which allows for seamless interaction with Apple devices) for its own products. The Beats Fit Pro, on the other hand, include all of the features of Apple's AirPods Pro, but for $50 less. Active noise cancellation, extensive integration with iPhones—as well as Android phones—long battery life, and a great fit thanks to removable silicone ear tips and a flexible wing are all included. They also come in a colorful color (though I wish there were more possibilities), which I can't say for the AirPods Pro.

Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio

With all of the focus on Apple's unique silicon-powered MacBooks, Microsoft needed to make a statement. It did so with the Surface Laptop Studio. The Laptop Studio boasts a unique semi-detachable screen that is a dream for artists, making it easily the most fascinating item in the latest round of Surface goods. The Surface Studio's display splits from the rear panel and tilts forward like an easel, whereas the Surface Book's could be used as a standalone tablet that docked to create a full laptop. This allows you to set the screen at an angle comparable to that of a drawing table or lower it further into tablet mode. The lid opens backwards till the screen faces outward if you wish to share your masterpiece with others.

Everything works better than you'd think, and it gives a large segment of laptop buyers—artists, graphic designers, and those who take handwritten notes—a solid reason to avoid Apple. Granted, the Surface Laptop Studio is bulky, lacks the processing power of latest MacBook models, and costs a small fortune to begin with ($1,600).

At first sight, the iPhone 13 lineup doesn't appear to be a significant upgrade over the iPhone 12, but there are several compelling reasons to upgrade—particularly if you're upgrading from an older iPhone, such as the iPhone 8 or 8 Plus.

The most significant improvement is the battery life, which is hours and hours longer than the iPhone 12 series and even more so than previous iPhones. All four iPhones 13 are in this category. The Pro, on the other hand, has a few extra features over the standard iPhone 13, such as a beautiful, bright display with a 120Hz refresh rate, a stainless steel design that feels more premium than the cheaper aluminum iPhones, and a triple-lens rear camera with an improved telephoto lens and a new macrophotography mode for shooting extreme close-ups.

It's a security camera, I know. However, after spending some time researching and then living with the redesigned Nest Cam, I can confidently say it's one of the best security cameras to consider right now if you're in the market for one.

The $100 wired indoor Nest Cam is more expensive than cheaper competitors from TP-Link and Wyze, but its facial recognition is good, and it's all done on-device, so no data is sent to Google's cloud. The Nest Cam's general design is also superb, as Google designed it to look like a home accessory rather than what it is: a pastel-colored, updated monitoring gadget.

The Nest Cam's main major flaw is that Google is still ironing out the wrinkles in its smart home ecosystem.

Apple took five years to release a substantial upgrade to its original AirPods wireless earphones, which is unusual for a company that currently releases a new version of its flagship smartphone every year. However, with hundreds of millions of pairs sold over that period, a big revamp was unnecessary. But in 2021, we finally received one, and the third-generation AirPods are unquestionably superior to the originals.

The AirPods' dangling stem was reduced in size, and the overall design was quite similar to the AirPods Pro, just without the Pro's sound-isolating silicone ear tips. As a result, the AirPods in 2021 will still lack active noise reduction.

Since its first prototype a few years ago, Samsung's largest foldable phone has gone a long way. Granted, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is still quite expensive at $1,800. (without discounts). This is the greatest foldable smartphone you can buy for Samsung fanatics and those on the cutting edge.

The Z Fold 3's advantage isn't only that it looks like a conventional Samsung tablet from the front. It's the fact that it unfolds into a 7.6-inch tablet with S Pen compatibility. The AMOLED display is gorgeous and far more robust than previous models. This time around, Samsung incorporated IPX8 water resistance so that those looking for a next-gen phone without compromising flagship features didn't have to.

In years, the Galaxy Watch 4 is the first good Android smartwatch. It's a near-perfect marriage of Google's Android environment with Samsung's hardware-building ability, making it the ideal companion for Android users.

Samsung and Google collaborated on the Galaxy Watch 4 to make Android run well on a wristwatch. (Previously, Samsung relied on its proprietary Tizen OS, but that is no longer the case.) To compete with the Apple Watch, Samsung enhanced its watch lineup's existing physical health functions. The new Galaxy Watch, like Apple's wearable, can monitor your blood oxygen levels as you sleep, which is a useful health statistic.

The Galaxy Watch 4 isn't without flaws: there's no convenient way to contact Google Assistant, and the battery life might be better. But this is a hint that Android smartwatches are finally improving, which is long overdue.

Phone numbers are a little like fingerprints; they can reveal a lot about a person, for example, their name or where they live. If you received a call from a number you don't recognize, the following resources can help you identify the caller before you ring them back.

The Limits of an Online Phone Number Search

Several online tools let you reverse lookup and possibly identify who a phone number is registered to.

Unfortunately, you will run into several limitations with any phone number identification:

If someone added their number to the National Do Not Call Registry or had it removed from a site like WhitePages, it will be difficult to trace that phone number.

It's almost impossible to find out the identity of the person behind a mobile phone number for free. Though with North American numbers, you can at least find where the number was registered.

Moreover, many "free" services will try to sell you their service, even if it is possible to find the information for free elsewhere.

Some countries, including the UK and Australia, have restricted the reverse lookup of phone numbers. So if you're trying to find a number from these countries, you're out of luck.

Phone numbers can go out of service or change owners. Since it can take some time for a service to catch up on these changes, you can never fully rely on the information you find online.

With those restrictions in mind, let's look at the best strategies to check for the origin or owner of a phone number.

Top Sites to Find a Phone Number

1. Google

This is the brute force method of identifying a phone number, but it's quick, easy, and completely free. If the call is from an official or otherwise public source, a search engine like Google or DuckDuckGo might come up with every last detail about the location and owner of the phone number.

Your Google search did not amount to much, so what next?

Bonus: Find Out Where the Phone Number Is From

Before you can choose the best service to identify the owner of a phone number, let's narrow it down to a specific location first. You can skip this step if you recognize the country and area code. For automatic location lookup, you can also skip ahead and try the first online tool listed below.

Generally, a North American phone number consists of 10 digits. The first three digits represent the area code, meaning you can use these numbers to narrow down the location of the number. An easy way to do this is to type the three digits followed by the phrase "area code" into a Google search.

It's a little more complicated if you've received a call from an international number. You should see a much longer number, including a country code, which can be anywhere from one (e.g. +1 for the USA and Canada) to three (e.g. +506 for Costa Rica) digits long. Just as outlined above, head over to Google, type in the number with the phrase "country code", and you'll get an instant answer.

To find out more about the number's location within a country, you'll need to learn more about how their phone numbers work. For example, area codes in Germany generally start with a zero and can be three to five digits long, such as 030 for Berlin or 0711 for Stuttgart. In a long-distance call from Germany (country code +49), however, the number should show up as +49-711-xxxxxx, i.e. omitting the zero from the area code.

Now that you have a better idea of where the phone number is from, choose a service that covers this location.

2. Whitepages

If Whitepages does not have an entry, it will give you some basic details about the number, such as its location and spam or fraud risk.

Let me see what happens to your handwriting when you have to face the dilemma of writing more or losing marks. Because somehow teachers felt just because the dude can write more means he knows more. Anyways.

A custom project

Let’s say you just created a personal website. And what says personal more than a personal font?

You can deploy it in the about section, maybe a blog post, your diary section, etcetera. Your creativity is the limit here. Okay without any further blabber let’s see how to create a font from your handwriting for free.

According to Wikipedia, the verb “to google” was added to the Oxford English Dictionary in July 2006. The phrase commonly refers to “searching for information on the World Wide Web“, regardless of which search engine is used.

Learning how to search the internet, effectively and efficiently, is a really important skill these days! The World Wide Web is big! Like, really, really big! And it is getting bigger every day.

This means you need to develop some pretty serious internet searching skills in order to narrow down the results so that the information you find is relevant to what you searching for.

5 Best Google Search Tips and Tricks

1. Use unique, specific terms

It is pretty amazing the number of Web pages that are returned when you perform a search online. You might think that the word email is relatively specialized. Yet a Google search of the word email returns 2,560,000,000 results! To reduce the number of pages that are returned, you need to use unique terms that are specific to the subject you are researching.

2. Use the plus (+) to narrow the search

How often have you searched for a term and had the search engine return something totally unexpected? Terms with multiple meanings can return a lot of unwanted results.

Using the same example from earlier, searching for the word email got us, well over 2 billion results!! If you were to add email +providers, you narrow down the results to a mere 7,500,00, which is still way more information than you probably need.

But if you were to search email +providers +free, the very first result that is returned is an article about “10 Free Email Service Providers You Will Love”. Which is a lot more helpful than trying to wade through over 2 billion results trying to find information on free email providers.

3. Use the minus operator (-) to eliminate unwanted results

Likewise, the rarely used but powerful minus operator, equivalent to a Boolean NOT, can remove many unwanted results. If you were searching for information about “apples”, you may be a little disappointed, because the first thing that comes up in the results is, Apple computers. To narrow down your search results, you could eliminate any results that refer to computers by searching for apples -computers.

You can also combine the use of the plus (+) and minus (-) operators in a search query.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" data-ad-client="ca-pub-3831380926719097" data-ad-format="auto" data-ad-slot="6696929894" data-full-width-responsive="true" style="display: block;"></ins>

You could search for apples +green -computers to narrow your search, even more, to find information about green apples and eliminate computers from the results.

4. Use quotation marks for exact phrases

I often remember parts of phrases I have seen on a Web page. Or part of a quotation I want to track down. Or some lyrics to a song. Using quotation marks around a phrase will return only those exact words, in that order. It’s one of the best ways to limit the number of pages returned.

For example, the phrase “live free or die” (which I know is the state motto of New Hampshire). This will return 419,000 results. But right there at the top is a link to Wikipedia about it being the state motto of NH.

Of course, remembering the phrase or lyrics exactly right is key — and if your memory is as good as mine, that can be a bit problematic.

5. Combine multiple search tips

If you combine the use of some of these search tips, you can continue to narrow down the results so that they become more specific and relevant to what you are searching for.

If you were searching for song lyrics for the Garth Brooks song, The River, your search may look something like this, “I will sail my vessel” +lyrics +garth.

Google Search Tips and Tricks – The bottom line

These tools are only as useful as the typing fingers wielding them. You may remember that old saying garbage in, garbage out? Well, a search engine is only as good as the information you put into it.

Search engines will try to place the most relevant results at the top of the list, but if your search terms are too broad or ambiguous, the results will not be very helpful. It is your responsibility to learn how to make your searches both fast and effective.

The Internet is a great equalizer for those who know how to use it efficiently. Anyone can now easily find facts using a search engine instead of dredging them up from memory — assuming they know a few basic tricks. Never underestimate the power of a skilled search expert.

We have gone from stone tools to amazing computers that fit in our pockets. The only issue is we are also great at trashing this planet we call home. But things are getting serious, and at some point, we have to take action.

Most of us don’t really know how much of an issue e-waste really is. What happens to those old phones we hoard and throw away after years of living in a drawer? The first thought would be to dump it in the trash, but that mentality is bringing serious repercussions that affect our environment.

data-full-width-responsive="true"></ins>

For starters, smartphones and other electronics have materials you wouldn’t want just lying around in the dump. These include PCB, lead, mercury, nickel, arsenic and much, much more.

It seems the USA is the main contributor, beating China by more than a million tons. To make matters even worse, our recycling rate seems to be pretty low (29% for the USA in 2012), and that’s something we need to change, especially considering how much the mobile industry continues to grow.

The best solution is recycling, so we thought we would offer a list of good options for when you need to get rid of those old phones. Don’t just throw them in the trash!

Does it work? Let someone else use it!

Is the phone still usable? The best way to recycle it is to either sell it or hand it over to someone who may need it. Remember, someone’s trash can be another person’s treasure. Check with family and friends to see if that old phone could be something they need.

This is really the best way to recycle something; just keeping it alive and stop someone from buying another phone that will go straight to the landfills.

Or continue using it…

Don’t like the idea of giving out your precious devices? There are always ways to reuse your old smartphones. I have heard of people turning these into internet-connected security cameras, music players, temporary travel phones, gaming devices, remote controls and more. Your possibilities are endless if this happens to be a smartphone. And if it’s old enough, maybe that cool hipster friend will love to use it!

Call 2 Recycle

Call 2 Recycle has been around since the early ’90s, something not many other organizations can tout. They have also helped get rid of over 100 million pounds of solid waste, and this year they are nearing the 6.5 million pounds of batteries recycled.

It’s free, and though you will make no money from this, at least you know you are helping your planet. Just use their recycling locations tool to find a participating centre around you. They are all over the place (in the USA), so you will have no issue finding a centre.

Cellphones for Soldiers

Life can’t be easy in the front lines, and I bet it’s not simple for our military men and women to be so far from home. Cellphones for Soldiers has been helping troops call home at no charge. Over 216 million minutes have been handed out through over 3 million calling cards. You can learn all about donating phones or funds straight from the official website.

Recycling for Charities

I don’t know about you, but when I give out anything for free I like to think that it goes towards a good cause, not just a company making more money. Recycling for Charities is a good way to give back to the community by helping great causes. They help a plethora of organizations and will always have a featured charity. And if you run a charity, you can even sign up to get help!

Hope Phones

We are lucky to have enough technology to even throw away. At least that is the approach Medic Mobile’s Hope Phones campaign takes. Their idea is to get money from phones that could be resold or safely dispose of the ones that can’t be saved. These funds help them aid healthcare programs in Africa, Asia and Latin America. They claim each donated phone provides for 10 new phones for health workers in 21 countries.

Best Buy

Most of you probably have a Best Buy close to home, which means you also have a super-easy way to safely recycle your electronics. The popular electronics retailer always has containers for recycling right next to their front gates. They have already properly disposed of over a billion pounds of electronics, which is a huge accomplishment. It sure is nice to see a company like this trying to help out, right? Not really a good cause, but it still helps the environment and will make donating your phones a breeze, since Best Buy is everywhere.

Donate to Oxfam

Oxfam is a UK-based organization with the goal of fighting poverty. They will try to save used devices, fix them and sell them. These funds will then be used to buy water tanks, wells, tools, seeds school books and other basic necessities for those who are not as fortunate to have them in abundance.

Wrap-up

You may have noticed a pattern in this list; none of the campaigns listed makes money out of this. And if they do, they use it for a good cause. OK, that’s not actually true – Best Buy makes some money, but “just barely”. It’s not really a business they are in to make a fortune from, though.

Aside from that, all of these are good causes. And that’s what recycling is supposed to be about, right? It’s not nice to staple a good cause to any business just to make money out of it. These are some great ways to dispose of your technology.

Have any of you guys tried these recycling programs in the past? How did the process go?

What Are Telegram Channels?

Telegram channels are different from Telegram groups, though they do appear to be similar. For instance, Telegram groups can have up to 200,000 users, and they can be open to the public.

Channels, on the other hand, are specifically designed for broadcasting messages to a large audience. Unlike groups, they are not designed for conversations.

You can have an unlimited number of subscribers to a public or private channel. Public channels get their own “www.t.me/tricksgum” URL.

Only the channel owner or the admin can post to the channel, each message has a view count and details of who shared the message, and channels can include rich media like video, audio, polls, and more.

The process of muting and unmuting a channel is the same on both the Android and iPhone apps. From the Telegram app, open the Telegram channel in question, and from the bottom, tap the “Mute” button to mute the channel. You can come back and unmute it from the same place.

You can add users in Telegram in two ways: First, by using their phone numbers (either by manually adding them or by sharing your contact book), or by using unique usernames (similar to Twitter).

If you and your contacts use the username system, you can actually continue to use Telegram (join groups, subscribe to channels, and more) without ever sharing your phone number. To do this, all you have to do is disable a setting.

Currently, Telegram only supports voice and video calls in one-on-one conversations. It has a separate Voice Chat feature where anyone in the Telegram group can drop in and talk. In this article, we will be focusing on making voice and video calls in private conversations.

While Signal does a pretty good job when it comes to privacy, no app is completely secure. Because Signal is based on phone numbers, anyone with your phone number can look you up if you’re on Signal. This could pose a privacy risk down the line.

Thankfully, Signal makes it quite easy to delete your account in both the Android and iPhone app.

Deleting your Signal account will delete all the data associated with it as well. This includes all the chat messages, media, contacts, and associated data. If you sign up again with the same number, you’ll be starting with a blank slate. If you have any sensitive data in Signal, we recommend that you export it before starting the deletion process.

It's a total pain, a lot of times you lose things and you also have to start afresh. If you feel the same way, Telegram has a new feature — the ability to import chats from WhatsApp. The steps are very simple and here's how you can do it.

Before you try out this feature, make sure you have Telegram 7.4 Update because that's the version that brings the migration feature.

Select the option as per your preference.

After doing this, you'd be able to see that particular WhatsApp chat on Telegram. For now, you can only move chats one by one, there's no way to move them across in bulk. You can also export group chats using the same method.

These are also the kind of conversations you don’t want others to save permanently. Here’s how to send disappearing messages on Instagram using Vanish Mode.

For dispatching self-destructing texts, Instagram offers a feature called “Vanish Mode” on its messaging service. Any text or media you send in Vanish Mode is automatically wiped as soon as the recipient sees it.

To access Vanish Mode, first, make sure you have the latest version of the Instagram app on your Android smartphone or iPhone.

Next, open the Instagram app on your phone and swipe in from the left edge of the screen (or tap the text bubble button at the top right) to view a list of your direct messages.

Select the conversation that you’d like to use Vanish Mode for.

Perform a swipe up gesture above the text box to activate Vanish Mode. Once that’s successful, Instagram will update your chat background with a darker shade and throw in a few animations to let you know Vanish Mode is active.

In Vanish Mode, you can continue to chat normally and send messages in all the usual formats, like direct stories, voice clips, and more.

The difference is that once you swipe up again to leave Vanish Mode and the other person reads whatever you have sent, Instagram will delete those messages.

While the recipient is free to take a screenshot of your messages in Vanish Mode, Instagram will notify you if and when they do.

Do note that Instagram retains your Vanish Mode media and texts for up to an hour after they have been deleted. This is in case the recipient files a report for abuse and harassment and Instagram needs the Vanish Mode data to take action.

Whether you’re talking about end-to-end encrypted messaging, email, file storage, or anything else, this ensures that no one in the middle can see your private data.

In other words: If a chat app offers end-to-end encryption, for example, only you and the person you’re chatting with will be able to read the contents of your messages. In this scenario, not even the company operating the chat app can see what you’re saying.

Encryption Basics

First, let’s start with the basics of encryption. Encryption is a way of scrambling (encrypting) data so that it can’t be read by everyone. Only the people who can unscramble (decrypt) the information can see its contents. If someone doesn’t have the decryption key, they won’t be able to unscramble the data and view the information.

(This is how it’s supposed to work, of course. Some encryption systems have security flaws and other weaknesses.)

Your devices are using various forms of encryption all the time. For example, when you access your online banking website—or any website using HTTPS, which is most websites these days—the communications between you and that website are encrypted so that your network operator, internet service provider, and anyone else snooping on your traffic can’t see your banking password and financial details.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
style="display:block"
data-ad-client="ca-pub-3831380926719097"

data-ad-format="auto"
data-full-width-responsive="true"></ins>

Wi-Fi uses encryption, too. That’s why your neighbors can’t see everything you’re doing on your Wi-Fi network—assuming that you use a modern Wi-Fi security standard that hasn’t been cracked, anyway.

Encryption is also used to secure your data. Modern devices like iPhones, Android phones, iPads, Macs, Chromebooks, and Linux systems (but not all Windows PCs) store their data on your local devices in encrypted form. It’s decrypted after you sign in with your PIN or password.

Encryption “in Transit” and “at Rest”: Who Holds the Keys?

So encryption is everywhere, and that’s great. But when you’re talking about communicating privately or storing data securely, the question is: Who holds the keys?

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
style="display:block"
data-ad-client="ca-pub-3831380926719097"
data-ad-slot="6696929894"
data-ad-format="auto"
data-full-width-responsive="true"></ins>

For example, let’s think about your Google account. Is your Google data—your Gmail emails, Google Calendar events, Google Drive files, search history, and other data—secured with encryption?

Well, yes. In some ways.

Google uses encryption to secure data “in transit.” When you access your Gmail account, for example, Google connects via secure HTTPS. This ensures that no one else can snoop on the communication going on between your device and Google’s servers. Your internet service provider, network operator, people within range of your Wi-Fi network, and any other devices between you and Google’s servers can’t see the contents of your emails or intercept your Google account password.

Google also uses encryption to secure data “at rest.” Before the data is saved to disk on Google’s servers, it is encrypted. Even if someone pulls off a heist, sneaking into Google’s data center and stealing some hard drives, they wouldn’t be able to read the data on those drives.

Both encryption in transit and at rest are important, of course. They’re good for security and privacy. It’s much better than sending and storing the data unencrypted!

But here’s the question: Who holds the key that can decrypt this data? The answer is Google. Google holds the keys.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
style="display:block"
data-ad-client="ca-pub-3831380926719097"
data-ad-slot="6696929894"
data-ad-format="auto"
data-full-width-responsive="true"></ins>

Why It Matters Who Holds the Keys

Since Google holds the keys, this means that Google is capable of seeing your data—emails, documents, files, calendar events, and everything else.

If a rogue Google employee wanted to snoop on your data—and yes, it’s happened—encryption wouldn’t stop them.

If a hacker somehow compromised Google’s systems and private keys (admittedly a tall order), they would be able to read everyone’s data.

If Google was required to turn over data to a government, Google would be able to access your data and hand it over.

Other systems may protect your data, of course. Google says that it has implemented better protections against rogue engineers accessing data. Google is clearly very serious about keeping its systems secure from hackers. Google has even been pushing back on data requests in Hong Kong, for example.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
style="display:block"
data-ad-client="ca-pub-3831380926719097"
data-ad-slot="6696929894"
data-ad-format="auto"
data-full-width-responsive="true"></ins>

So yes, those systems may protect your data. But that’s not encryption protecting your data from Google. It’s just Google’s policies protecting your data.

Don’t get the impression that this is all about Google. It’s not—not at all. Even Apple, so beloved for its privacy stances, does not end-to-end encrypt iCloud backups. In other words: Apple keeps keys that it can use to decrypt everything you upload in an iCloud backup.

How End-to-End Encryption Works

Now, let’s talk chat apps. For example: Facebook Messenger. When you contact someone on Facebook Messenger, the messages are encrypted in transit between you and Facebook, and between Facebook and the other person. The stored message log is encrypted at rest by Facebook before it’s stored on Facebook’s servers.

But Facebook has a key. Facebook itself can see the contents of your messages.

The solution is end-to-end encryption. With end-to-end encryption, the provider in the middle—whoever you replace Google or Facebook with, in these examples—will not be able to see the contents of your messages. They do not hold a key that unlocks your private data. Only you and the person you’re communicating with hold the key to access that data.

Your messages are truly private, and only you and the people you’re talking to can see them—not the company in the middle.

Why It Matters

End-to-end encryption offers much more privacy. For example, when you have a conversation over an end-to-end encrypted chat service like Telegram, you know that only you and the person you’re talking to can view the contents of your communications.

However, when you have a conversation over a messaging app that isn’t end-to-end encrypted—like Facebook Messenger—you know that the company sitting in the middle of the conversation can see the contents of your communications.

It’s not just about chat apps. For example, email can be end-to-end encrypted, but it requires configuring PGP encryption or using a service with that built in, like ProtonMail. Very few people use end-to-end encrypted email.

End-to-end encryption gives you confidence when communicating about and storing sensitive information, whether it’s financial details, medical conditions, business documents, legal proceedings, or just intimate personal conversations you don’t want anyone else having access to.

End-to-End Encryption Isn’t Just About Communications

End-to-end encryption was traditionally a term used to describe secure communications between different people. However, the term is also commonly applied to other services where only you hold the key that can decrypt your data.

For example, password managers like 1Password, BitWarden, LastPass, and Dashlane are end-to-end encrypted. The company can’t rummage through your password vault—your passwords are secured with a secret only you know.

In a sense, this is arguably “end-to-end” encryption—except that you’re on both ends. No one else—not even the company that makes the password manager—holds a key that lets them decrypt your private data. You can use the password manager without giving the password manager company’s employees access to all your online banking passwords.

Another good example: If a file storage service is end-to-end encrypted, that means that the file storage provider can’t see the contents of your files. If you want to store or sync sensitive files with a cloud service—for example, tax returns that have your social security number and other sensitive details—encrypted file storage services are a more secure way to do that than just dumping them in a traditional cloud storage service like Dropbox, Google Drive, or Microsoft OneDrive.

data-full-width-responsive="true"></ins>

One Downside: Don’t Forget Your Password!

There’s one big downside with end-to-end encryption for the average person: If you lose your decryption key, you lose access to your data. Some services may offer recovery keys that you can store, but if you forget your password and lose those recovery keys, you can no longer decrypt your data.

That’s one big reason that companies like Apple, for example, might not want to end-to-end encrypt iCloud backups. Since Apple holds the encryption key, it can let you reset your password and give you access to your data again. This is a consequence of the fact that Apple holds the encryption key and can, from a technical perspective, do whatever it likes with your data. If Apple didn’t hold the encryption key for you, you wouldn’t be able to recover your data.

Imagine if, every time someone forgets a password to one of their accounts, their data in that account would be wiped out and become inaccessible. Forget your Gmail password? Google would have to erase all your Gmails to give you your account back. That’s what would happen if end-to-end encryption was used everywhere.

Examples of Services That Are End-to-End Encrypted

Here are some basic communication services that offer end-to-end encryption. This isn’t an exhaustive list—it’s just a short introduction.

For chat apps, Signal offers end-to-end encryption for everyone by default. Apple iMessage offers end-to-end encryption, but Apple gets a copy of your messages with the default iCloud backup settings. WhatsApp says that every conversation is end-to-end encrypted, but it does share a lot of data with Facebook. Some other apps offer end-to-end encryption as an optional feature that you have to enable manually, including Telegram and Facebook Messenger.

For end-to-end encrypted email, you can use PGP—however, it’s complicated to set up. Thunderbird now has integrated PGP support. There are encrypted email services like ProtonMail and Tutanota that store your emails on their servers with encryption and make it possible to more easily send encrypted emails. For example, if one ProtonMail user emails another ProtonMail user, the message is automatically sent encrypted so that no one else can see its contents. However, if a ProtonMail user emails someone using a different service, they’ll need to set up PGP to use encryption. (Note that encrypted email doesn’t encrypt everything: While the message body is encrypted, for example, subject lines aren’t.)

If you’ve ever needed to charge anything, from smartphones to tablets, to cameras and even new laptops, you’ve likely needed to use one. However, USB cables come in different shapes and sizes despite the fact a lot of them do the same things. In this short and handy guide, we’ll take a look at all the different types of USB cables available on the market.

USB Type-A

USB Type-A connectors are extremely common and will likely be at one end of a lot of USB cables nowadays. You can connect various devices such as smartphones, cameras, keyboards, and more to computers to transfer data, or plug into wall chargers to charge these gadgets with a Type-A port.

USB Type-B

These cables are not quite as common and versatile as the others on this list. USB Type-B connectors are primarily for connecting printers and scanners to computers. They have a square shape with beveled exterior corners on the top ends. You might still find a USB Type-B port on some devices, but it’s becoming quite rare.

This was the standard for various devices a while back but was quickly replaced by the micro-USB connector mentioned below. You’ll find it on older models of various gadgets especially cameras, MP3 players, and game controllers, among others. As its name suggests, it’s smaller than the than a regular USB, but larger when compared to its successor.

Micro-USB

The micro-USB connector is very small and it let manufacturers produce slimmer devices. Micro-USB was widely adopted but is quickly being left behind. That said, some ultra-affordable smartphones even now come with micro-USB ports. You might find micro-USB ports on certain accessories like Bluetooth speakers, wireless earphones, smartwatch charging stands, and more as well.

USB-C

USB-C, previously known as USB Type-C, is the latest king of the hill. You will find it on most new devices, and it offers faster data transfer rates than previous USB versions. The biggest advantage of USB-C is that it’s reversible and can be plugged in either up or down. It has become the new standard for mobile devices. Universal adoption is still a little ways away, but it’s never been closer than with USB-C.

Every now and then, you probably need to hand your phone over to someone else, like if a friend is using your GPS while you drive or your kid wants to play a game. But that doesn’t mean you also need to give them the chance to weed through all your embarrassing photos and Web history. Android lets you pin one app to the screen, requiring the password to be punched in before opening a new app. To unlock the option, go to Settings > Security > Screen Pinning, and turn the feature on. Now go to the app your friend needs to look at, then hit the back button to go to the Overview screen. Swipe back down to the app you were just on, and tap the pin icon on the bottom right. When you close the app, the phone will shut completely, and you’ll need the password to get back in.

Access hidden symbols

There’s more than meets the eye on your keyboard, with some Android hacks hiding in plain view. Long-pressing certain keys will reveal more character options, and you can drag your finger up to type the one you want. For instance, hit vowels to find accents and umlauts, or hold down the dollar sign to find more currency symbols.

Fully open the Quick Settings menu with ease

Dragging the Quick Settings menu down once to open, then swiping again to maximize it doesn’t feel so “quick.” Save yourself a step by using two fingers to drag the status bar down to open it all the way in one fell swoop.

Make your apps easier to access at home

Passcodes are an important security feature to keep crooks from sifting through your information, but they’re also a hassle to enter every time you want to open your phone. By setting your house as a “trusted place,” you can stop using a password at home but automatically put the security feature back in place when you’re out and about. Go to Settings > Security > Smart Lock. Now you can add “trusted places,” like your home address, where the device will stay unlocked until you leave.

ALSO READ: How To Hack/Unlock Android Pattern Lock, PIN Password

Stop hitting unlock when you’re out and about

That’s not the end of the Android hacks you can find in Smart Lock. Fiddling with your password when you’re out for a run gets annoying (and dangerous), but on-body detection mode lets you type it in just once. If you unlock it while you’re moving, it won’t ask for passcode again until it senses you’ve put it down. Now you can open Spotify without bothering with a password every time.

Zoom in one-handed on Google Maps

The two-finger pinch you use to zoom on Google Maps isn’t too convenient when you only have one free hand. You might already know you can double-tap the screen to zoom in, but there’s an easier way to zoom in and out to just the right spot. Double-tap, but don’t take your finger off the screen. Drag your finger down to zoom in or up to zoom out.

Type one-handed easily

A big phone is great for fitting content onto the screen, but it’s not so ideal when your fingers can’t reach the right buttons—especially when typing. That’s where Android hacks for one-handed mode come in. Using a Google keyboard (you might need to download it first if it isn’t your model’s default), press and hold the blue return button key, then drag your finger to the symbol on the left, which has an image of a hand holding a phone. The keyboard will squeeze over to the right side of the phone, and you can hit the right arrow to shift the easy-to-reach buttons to the other side. Hit the full-screen button (the four arrows pointing outward) to bring it back to its original size.

Limit your notifications when you need to focus

Do Not Disturb is useful when you don’t want your phone to wake you up in the middle of the night, but sometimes you just want to limit notifications a little bit without shutting them off completely. Priority mode makes it easy to customize. Head to Settings > Sound > Do Not Disturb. You can limit whom you can receive calls and messages from (including all contacts or starred contacts only), or let calls through if the same person calls twice within 15 minutes. That way, you can be on guard for emergency calls from your kid without needing to deal with a million pings from your book club. Plus, you can block “visual disturbances” so your phone doesn’t even light up when you’re trying to limit distractions.

Customize the Quick Settings bar

Newer Androids using Marshmallow and above aren’t stuck with the icons Google automatically puts in the swipe-down status bar at the top of your phone. Open the Quick Settings bar all the way, then hit the pencil icon. Not only can you long-press the tiles to drag them to the order you’d like, but you can also drag the ones you don’t use off entirely or add ones that you want back.

If you prefer Chrome to the YouTube app, or WhatsApp to the usual SMS messenger, you can make sure the right one opens when you click a link that sends you to a new app. Go to Settings > Apps, and then hit the gear icon on the top right. Under “default,” you can pick your favorite app to use in categories like opening links or making phone calls.
